The big news this month is the launch of a government inquiry asking if enough is being done to address the impact of menopause in the workplace.

The House of Commons Women and Equalities Committee is seeking written submissions addressing questions including:

  • How can practices addressing workplace discrimination relating to menopause be implemented?
  • How should people who experience the menopause but do not identify as women be supported in relation to menopause and the workplace?
  • How well does current legislation protect women from discrimination in the workplace associated with the menopause?

These are thoughtful questions but I anticipate the outcome will be purely legislative and likely mean a menopause policy becomes mandatory for workplaces.  There are benefits to this including:

Communication & Engagement.  Workplace policies are a useful tool to communicate with employees and provide clarity.  They establish boundaries and best practice outlining what employees can expect from their employer and equally the behaviours an employer expects from employees.

Retention & Risk Management.  Almost a million women have left their job due to lack of support whilst working through menopause so the risk for business is huge in terms of loss of talent, knowledge and experience.  A policy is seen as a way to prevent the exit of valued staff alongside protecting the organisation itself.
